Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

Leveling
Path of Exile's upgrade process differs from previous versions in some key ways. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a certain number of times before they're "leveled out." This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a few items and maximize the impact of those items, rather than dispersing upgrade costs across multiple pieces.

If an item does not reach its maximum level, the NPC grants players the option to transfer it to another character and re-infuse the item with a new set or upgrades. This process can take between one and two hours and cost the same amount of material. However, it has a lower chance of success.
